Washington County reported 170 new COVID-19 cases in latest week – Herald-Mail Media

Maryland reported far fewer COVID-19 cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 10,006 new cases. That’s down 12.9% from the previous week’s tally of 11,488 new cases of COVID-19.

In the latest week, new COVID-19 cases in the United States decreased 0.7% from the week before, with 730,572 cases reported, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. With 1.82% of the country’s population, Maryland had 1.37% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 15 states had more new cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Washington County reported 170 new cases of COVID-19 and three related deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it reported 175 new cases and one death. During the pandemic, the county has reported 36,277 cases and 591 deaths.

Franklin County, Pennsylvania, reported 252 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 249 cases and one death. Franklin County has reported 42,034 cases and 705 deaths during the pandemic.

Fulton County, Pennsylvania, reported 25 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 14 cases and one death. During the pandemic, it has reported 4,243 cases and 66 deaths.

Berkeley County, West Virginia, reported 181 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 280 cases and zero deaths. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Berkeley County has reported 37,546 cases and 309 deaths.

Jefferson County, West Virginia, reported 70 new cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 117 cases and zero deaths. Jefferson County has reported 15,163 cases and 135 deaths during the pandemic.

Morgan County, West Virginia, reported 12 new cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 18 cases and zero deaths. During the pandemic, it has reported 4,413 cases and 69 deaths.

Within Maryland, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Charles County with 266 cases per 100,000 per week; Montgomery County with 247; and Howard County with 245. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Montgomery County, with 2,594 cases; Prince George’s County, with 1,630 cases; and Baltimore City County, with 980. Weekly case counts rose in six counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Howard, Cecil and Charles counties.

Statewide, 48 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 42 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,117,397 people in Maryland have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 14,719 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows.

Pennsylvania cases plummet 10.1%

Pennsylvania added 20,281 new cases of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. That’s down 10.1% from the previous week’s tally of 22,564 new cases.

Across Pennsylvania, new cases fell in 40 counties. Weekly case counts rose in 26 counties from the previous week.

The state’s worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Greene County with 279 cases per 100,000 per week; Montour County with 269; and Beaver County with 240.

Statewide, 167 people reportedly died of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 159 people died.

In the United States, 86.2 million people have tested positive and more than 1 million people have died.

Maryland’s COVID-19 hospital admissions falling; admissions flat in Pennsylvania

Hospitals in 29 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 31 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, a USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data available as of Sunday, June 19, shows.
